Our History
In 2008, Martín Londoño suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident, becoming a permanent wheelchair user. With his innovative spirit, in 2016 he decided to transform wheelchair mobility by creating Colombia's first electric towing motor. This is how MATT (Mobility, Accessibility, Time, and Work) was born. Inspired by his love for motorcycles and bicycles, Martín built his own electric wheelchair handbike with the help of EcoCycle. The mission: not just to provide freedom of movement, but to empower people with motor disabilities.
MATT's vision of redefining wheelchair devices was evident from the start. Unlike conventional devices seen as medical tools, the MATT electric motor symbolizes independence, style, and technology. Martín joined forces with Simón Echavarría and Federico Alfonso to document the social exclusion faced by people with reduced mobility, and Mariano García soon joined. In June 2020, MATT was officially founded to improve the quality of life of people with reduced mobility in Colombia.
Over time, MATT has grown beyond the electric wheelchair device. MATT Experiences emerged, an inclusive tourism initiative that shows Medellín from a wheelchair user's perspective, making visible the physical and systemic barriers they face daily. Today, MATT is a Colombian reference company in adaptive electric mobility, social inclusion and technology for people with motor disabilities.
Our Achievements
In its brief history, MATT has had significant achievements. We developed the sixth version of our vehicle and have been recognized numerous times:
- 1We were nominated for Innovation of the Year at the 2022 Geneva Health Forum.
- 2We received recognition from the Medellín Mayor's Office for our work in promoting independent living in 2022.
- 3We won the Medellín Smart Tourist Destination award in accessibility from the Medellín Mayor's Office in 2021.
- 4We won the metropolitan area's sustainable mobility call in 2022.
- 5We were among the top 5 for the 2021 Lafiya Innovators immersion in Switzerland.
- 6We were among the top 10 for the 2021 OpenUp immersion in the Netherlands.

- 8We participated in a public mobility pilot for people with reduced mobility together with the Metropolitan Area, EAFIT, and Ruta N.
- 9We were awarded the style note by the Medellín Council in 2023.
Looking to the Future
MATT has big plans. We will focus on exporting our electric wheelchair devices to more countries, expanding our local support network and continuing our mission of inclusive mobility for people with motor disabilities. We firmly believe mobility is a human right, and we are determined to make it a reality for everyone in Colombia and worldwide.
